- Task21st June 2019, Malumfashi Reachout Katsina
This report has a significant explanation towards the vision of The Light Givers Humanitarian Foundation (TLGHT) on scholarship initiative program in respect to vulnerable children in our society. On 22nd June 2019, The Light Givers Humanitarian Foundation (TLGHF) launched a program called “A child’s education is the wealth of a nation”. This came as a result of the information obtained from different recognized and registered media houses in Nigeria that in the Northeast, the ongoing hostilities between non-state armed groups and security forces have affected 7.9 million people and displayed 1.8 million in the Northwest and North central regions, inter-communal violence has displaced nearly 310,000 people and undermined the livelihoods of thousands more. The humanitarian situation is relatively poor haven considered the statistics emanated from these region with previously high levels of malnutrition and common childhood illnesses. In Northwest Zamfara and Sokoto States, over 200,000 children are estimated to be severely malnourished and 3.5 million people require water and sanitation. At least 1.1 million children need support to access education, and 1.77 million children require child protection services.
The Light Givers Humanitarian Foundation (TLGHF) visited the areas affected especially in Katsina State Malumfashi to be precise under the Archdiocese of Sokoto where over 150 thousand children need support to access education and awarded scholarships to students from primary to tertiary level under the direct watch and blessing of Bishop Mathew Hassan Kuka, the Archbishop of Sokoto Archdiocese.
The Light Givers Humanitarian Foundation (TLGHF) also donated food items, accommodation and performed many other humanitarian activities to the less privileged. The program defines social and economic vulnerability to include students who have lost of one or both parents, students whose parents are living with HIV/AIDS or Chronic illnesses and who are unable to educate their children, and families affected by disaster such as famine. The program also served as a way of giving hope to bright, deserving children by giving them the opportunity to obtain a quality education and resultant benefits including better education outcome, improved chances of success in life, increased gender equality in secondary education, new opportunities for students from rural areas to access education and greater social integration among students.
Malumfashi is an interior native community in Katsina State. The people are basically known to be peasant farmers. The local community is plagued with high levels of illiteracy; due to its poor access to education, poverty and poor social infrastructure.
In other to access education, it is required of its indigenes to travel long miles away from their interior villages, to find educational institution. It is on this premise; the Dominican Sisters of Sokoto Diocese embarked on the mission to permeate these interior communities to find children eager to receive good education relocate the kids from their interior communities and rehabilitate them in a rented accommodation.
